Program Overview

The Program of Sustainable Urban-Rural Development and ESG Practice (formerly the Program of Urban-Rural Revitalization Education) was established in response to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the educational mission of Tsing Hua College. The program aims to cultivate innovative and cross-disciplinary leaders with international mobility who are committed to sustainable urban-rural development and ESG-related issues. Through in-depth issue exploration, disciplinary integration, and project-based learning, students are equipped with both professional knowledge and practical leadership. The program also fosters impactful solutions that demonstrate the social responsibility of the university.

Program Objectives

Encourage students to observe and investigate real-world issues related to urban, rural, industrial, environmental, and social systems, enhancing their awareness, disciplinary relevance, and problem-solving abilities regarding urban-rural challenges.

Break away from conventional linear university curricula and establish a learning model that integrates academic knowledge with practical application.

Connect with on- and off-campus resources and professional networks, guiding students to apply their expertise to social issues in the field and develop “portable” engagement capabilities.

Build a collaborative teaching model for sustainable university-local partnerships.

Curriculum Structure

Focusing on regional revitalization, ESG themes, and university social responsibility (USR), this program uses the Hsinchu Area—comprising Hsinchu City and County—as its primary field site. Students engage in a place-based learning trajectory composed of three learning modules.

Regional Issue Exploration / Sustainability & ESG Planning

Core Goal: Calibrate. This module helps students explore either of the following themes:

Deepen understanding of local contexts in Hsinchu County and City, including historical, cultural, and industrial aspects, guiding students to investigate regional issues and develop problem-awareness.

Develop knowledge of sustainability topics and explore how these relate to industry, environment, and society, fostering interest in sustainable development and ESG policy and strengthening planning skills.

Professional Knowledge Integration

Core Goal: Elevate. This module focuses on applying students’ academic expertise to socially engaged learning. Through problem-solving and participatory pedagogy, students integrate disciplinary knowledge and personal competencies into addressing sustainable urban-rural and ESG issues. It enhances their ability to translate learning into action, responding to the evolving role of higher education in regional development.

Practice and Innovation

Core Goal: Activate. This module centers on the Capstone Project on Sustainable Urban-Rural Development and ESG Implementation. Students consolidate course learning and field experiences to design actionable solutions. By working within local communities, social groups, or enterprises, students apply their projects to build social capital and promote the organic development of sustainable regional systems. This process may also foster potential opportunities for youth entrepreneurship and employment.
