Guided by our motto, “Self-Discipline and Social Commitment” (自強不息、厚德載物), NTHU actively engages faculty and students in addressing social challenges through talent cultivation and research development. In recent years, NTHU has drawn upon its deep-rooted humanities and social sciences strengths to become a key integrator in Hsinchu’s regional innovation network. We focus on establishing a knowledge platform for urban-rural revitalization and continue to promote social practice initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our social practice envisions “urban-rural co-prosperity and social sustainability” as the foundation, working alongside stakeholders to build mutually beneficial, symbiotic partnerships between the university and society. The following goals have been set:

1. Identify key stakeholders within networks connecting the university, local communities, and industries, in order to accumulate social capital and co-create value in urban and rural areas.

2. Promote the Program of Sustainable Urban-Rural Development and ESG Practice, integrating intra- and inter-university resources to provide students with a practice-oriented, interdisciplinary learning environment. Students engage in capstone projects that reinforce a virtuous cycle between local issue-solving and talent development.

3. Foster academic and practical communities of regional innovation and local engagement, creating a collaborative platform for research and implementation that transforms accumulated social capital into a foundation for academic research and talent cultivation.

4. Leverage resources from both public and private sectors to launch interdisciplinary regional innovation projects. These initiatives aim to develop a platform for urban-rural value exchange through technology-driven approaches.

5. Cultivate cross-disciplinary talent in service innovation and design, enhancing youth entrepreneurship and revitalizing the local community economy driven by Hsinchu’s urban and rural dynamics.

6. Support student-led startups and innovation teams through access to internal and external resources. These initiatives reinforce local engagement and deepen the effectiveness of the urban-rural regeneration curriculum while amplifying social impact.

We have promoted University Social Responsibility for many years. Numerous alumni have actively contributed to local development in the Hsinchu area, and their efforts are increasingly recognized across sectors. This has also led to the emergence of innovative business models grounded in social practice. Building on this foundation, we have expanded its collaboration networks to include local enterprises and the Hsinchu Science Park Bureau, launching the Science Park Social Responsibility (SPSR) initiative. This initiative enables the science park to respond to social needs and facilitates a synergy between technology and society. In 2024, NTHU formally proposed the “USR x ESG” strategy as a new direction for university-wide social responsibility development.
